It is now the Bananas' Party! The biggest game developers' nightmare was choosing the right engine, mainly because it needed to fit the size of their pockets, obviously, as some of them need endless money to license.
Unreal is one of these engines that charges a lot of money to license its technology, but now, just some weeks after Unity announcement of its free version, Unreal has its free version too. What amazing!
Let's make the same thing we did when Unity became free. What are the intentions behind Unreal making its award winning engine free? Simple again? Yeah... simple: They want to create a solid user base to be hired on big companies already using Unreal, it will make easier for those companies as they wouldn't need to teach them how to use it.
Creating such a user base, those big companies won't think to use other engines. Again, it would be easier and cheaper to acquire people with knowledge on such technology. I don't think there will be the migration from those who use UDK to the full Unreal paid license, it is too expensive if they are targeting independent studios to use the free version.
"UDK is Unreal Engine 3, which has been used to create games in a wide range of genres, as well as military simulations, 3D architectural walkthroughs, animated movies and more. Users are only limited by their imaginations. Go ahead make something Unreal!” said Mark Rein, vice president of Epic Games
Maybe we should try using Unreal once at least here at Balder.
Download Unreal here. It is called UDK.
